A-1809-01 1809/6 Classic Head half-cent (C-5) VF-35

Price: $280
Wonderful, perfect original color scheme consisting of bisque highlights against chocolate-brown fields. Commercially, this is an EF coin, but a couple of little rim bumps and an ancient circulation scratch across the portrait must be noted. EAC 20.

A-1809-05 1809/6 Classic Head half-cent (C-5) VF-20

Price: $140
VF-30 or better details, but several ancient hairlines prominently cross the portrait.

A-1809-27 1809/6 Classic Head half-cent (C-5) EF-40

Powerfully detailed, but possibly recolored, as there is an unusual sheen, particularly in the left obverse field. Appears perfectly original and attractive face-on. EAC-20.

A-1854-01 1854 Coronet half-cent (C-1, R.1) MS-64+

Price: $750
This coin is 100% a gem - except for a solitary carbon dot on the obverse. It possesses scintillating mint luster and a strikingly beautiful greenish overtone to the natural and original brown patina. Nicely struck and exquisitely preserved. Removed from an ANACS MS-64 BN slab.

A-1855-42 1855 Coronet half-cent EF-40

Price: $115
Typically patinated, with faint reddish undertones beneath the otherwise brown coloration. Pretty nicely struck, though the rims display the effects of the usual die crumbling.

B-1794-62 1794 Liberty Cap large-cent (S-26, R.2) F-15

Price: 525
No text description has been provided for this coin. Please see image.

B-1795-52 1795 Liberty Cap large-cent AG-3

Price: $250
Despite being very well worn, the reverse actually display remnant details of the wreath, though some imagination is required to discern the denomination. The obverse actually grades very close to a full AG. The planchet for this coin is pleasing and doesn't display an particular problems.

B-1802-27 1802 Draped Bust large-cent (S-242) VF-20 detail

Price: $200
Only very lightly burnished, probably to give the surfaces a slightly more 'mellow' appearance. As seen now, this coin is very mildly micro-porous, with deceptively nice color. An ancient, stubby scratch can be seen behind Liberty's ear, but no other marks detract, and the details is nice and bold. EAC-10.

B-1803-42 1803 Draped Bust large-cent (S-249) F-12

Price: $325
An outstanding example of the very popular S-249 'corrected fraction' die-marriage - apparently an early die-state prior to occurence of the obverse die-bulge. The blundered fraction on the reverse die was first used in 1801 (NC-3), but then corrected for re-use in 1803, likely due to economization of expensive dies. This example has smooth, slightly glossy surfaces that display a few ancient hairlines on the left side of the obverse, but overall, this coin is nicely free of any significant surface problems. I microscopic rim-ding is seen on the obverse at 10:00, there is a tiny planchet void at 8:00 of the same side, and a solitary circulation mark in the field at 2:00, but these are trivial considerations, and the surface quality is otherwise remarkably appealing for an 1803 cent. These minor detractions, along with nearly VF details, seem to merit a commercial grade of Fine. I am convinced the color is 100% original, primarily because the coin was in an old St. Louis collection (Whitman album) since at least 1965, according to verifiable documentation shown to me. EAC 10

B-1806-61 1806 Draped Bust large-cent G-4

Price: $125
No text description has been provided for this coin. Please see image.

B-1809-61 1809 Classic Head large-cent VG-8

Price: $220
Bold FINE details, but surfaces are very dark. Fortunately, some two-tone contrast adds considerably to the eye appeal. Not badly corroded at all, with just uneven surface quality.

B-1813-61 1813 Classic Head large-cent VG-10

Price: $160
A little dark on the obverse, with remnants of per-striking corrosion evident above the reverse denomination.

B-1813-62 1813 Classic Head large-cent VG-8

Price: $135

B-1817-53 1817 Matron Head large-cent (N-14) MS-63

Price: $1,550
Bright and fully original, this is a lovely representative from the famed Randall Hoard of large-cents. The surfaces display typical staining and carbon spotting, but are nearly free from abrasions. EAC MS-62

B-1818-18 1818 Matron Head large-cent (N-10) MS-63

Price: $1,400
Prodigious original mint-red color beams off both sides of this lovely Randall Hard representative. The surfaces display outstanding mint luster, but thankfully, have not been oiled or otherwise 'enhanced', allowing the fully original surface quality to predominate. Scattered carbon spots, particularly at S13, are all that limit the grade. EAC MS-62

B-1819-53 1819 Matron Head large-cent (N-10) EAC-64

Price: $6,000
Certified or not, many Randall coins have been oiled, lacquered, or otherwise had their luster enhanced to make them even more appealing than they are naturally. This coin has seen no such treatment, and is as original as the day it was plucked out of the keg of coins that comprised the Randall hoard. Fiery flame-red mint luster glows beautifully from beneath patination that is almost perfectly divided between red and brown color. Remarkably, the surfaces are essentially entirely free of the carbon spotting often seen on these coins, with the only thing resembling carbon being a tiny dot just in front of the hairbun, and perhaps a couple of others on the rim. Oddly, the only detraction for this coin is a thin streak of grey toning that streaks directly across the middle of the obverse from between S3 and S4 to just above Liberty's ear. I can think of no explanation for this phenomenon, but careful examination reveals that it is not etched into the surface, and is in fact strictly a toning phenomenon. This is such a spectacularly original and attractive coin that it is difficult to imagine a nicer one existing. In my opinion, it is superior in quality to the Rasmussen and Childs coins. A tiny bagmark is visible just beneath Liberty's eye, and another is just northeast of S3, but I could find NONE on the reverse, so the commercial grade is probably MS-66 RB. I grade this coin EAC-64

B-1820-61 1820 Matron Head large-cent (N-13, R.1) MS-62 BN

Price: $475
Randall hoard coin

B-1822-27 1822 Matron Head large-cent (N-2, R.3) EF-40

Price: $400
Nicely original, with just a mild buildup of daker material next to a couple of stars. Rims are absolutely perfecgt, and there are no marks of siginificance. Good color. EAC 20.

B-1828-06 1828 Matron Head large-cent (N-5 (d/s C)) F-12

Price: $1,200
The late die state with a cud joining TED in UNITED on the reverse. A perfectly graded coin in F-12 (EAC VG-8), with a scratch above S6, a dig next to S10, a couple of superficial surface pinpricks and the usual scattering of circulation marks. Surfaces are caramel brown with a mild level of darker encrustation of on either side, particularly on the reverse. To quote the Robbie Brown auction catalog (1986, lot 648), 'This rare die state was first reported in 1914 by Augustus C. Gies, who notified Dr. Charles A. McGirk.'

B-1838-01 1838 Matron Head large-cent F-12

Price: $60
Good planchet and excellent color. Bisecting obverse die crack.

B-1842-12 1842 Petite Head large-cent VF-20

Price: $40
Obverse is a bit darker than the reverse,

B-1842-15 1842 Petite Head large-cent (N-4) VF-25

Price: $45
VF-30 details for a commercial grade, but various nicks require a five point downgrade. EAC F-15

B-1842-64 1842 Coronet large-cent VF-30

Price: $48

B-1848-61 1848 Coronet large-cent EF-40

B-1857-51 1857 Coronet large-cent EF-40

Price: $280
Annoying, but generally forgiveable rim damage appears mostly on the obverse rims, yet are not sufficiently detracting to affect any design elements. Terrific color and excellent, original quality.

C-1859-04 1859 Indian Head cent AU-50

Price: $240
May actually grade quite a bit higher, as the fields display good luster and nice, even honey-tan color. A great type coin.

C-1869-61 1869 Indian Head cent AU-55

Price:
No text description has been provided for this coin. Please see image.

C-1870-26 1870 Indian Head cent AU-53

F-1869-01 1869 Shield nickel

Price: $185
No text description has been provided for this coin. Please see image.

F-1876-51 1876 Shield nickel MS-63

Price: $375
Lovely mint luster gleams with slighly reflective appeal on both sides, and lovely die cracks across the obverse reveal a die that was very near the end of its usefulness. The strike is reasonably bold, with sharp lines in the shield and excellent central details on every star. Essentially untoned.

F-1876-52 1876 Shield nickel AU-50

Price: $200
Despite mint luster that suggests a higher grade, slight wear is augmented by a few bolder circulation scratches on the horizontal shield lines that are accounted for in the final net grade. An inconsistent die crack across the upper left obverse quadrant develops later into a shattered die, but at this point, the die was still strong enough to deliver fine detail at the time of striking. Plentiful luster and very good eye appeal for this conservative grade.

F-1883-16 1883 Liberty nickel (no cents) MS-64+

Price: $100
Beaming with terrific silvery luster and essentially mark free. The reason for the non-GEM grade is that part of the lower right obverse is faintly stained with what appear to be milkspots. But this is a coin that abounds with glittering eye appeal.

F-1887-06 1887 Liberty nickel MS-62

Price: $225
Correctly graded onl y MS-62 by PCGS. Although essentially brilliant, well-struck and simply blooming with mint luster, the surface quality of this coin is below average. It suffers from a multitude of bagmarks which, though individually trivial, exist in too many numbers to be ignored.

F-1888-06 1888 Liberty nickel MS-63

Price: $500
An attractive example of this underestimated date, with pleasing surface quality, excellent luster and an average strike. The grade is almost entirely accounted for by a fairly sizeable bagmark above the denomination on the reverse. The obverse appears quite choice for the assigned grade.

F-1889-06 1889 Liberty nickel MS-64

Price: $385
Outstanding example of this intriguing issue. Many of the proof coins of this date look just like business strikes, and conversely, the business strikes tend to be fairly well produced for 1889. The example offered here is delightful, fully original (as indicated by a toning streak on the reverse), and the surface quality outstanding. The strike is definitely above average for the series, and the luster pleasing. Simply a superb coin for the grade.

F-1892-40 1892 Liberty nickel MS-63

Price: $240
Although a couple of moderate obverse abrasions limit the grade of this coin, it is nonetheless a remarkably attractive example of the type. Booming luster is very pronounced on both sides, and the reverse details is nearly pinpoint sharp, with the left ear of corn virtually full. The stars are nicely defined, as is all of the central obverse detail. Furthermore, it's surprising how original this coin is, considering how many high-grade coins have been dipped. The patina is 100% intact, with iridescent rose toning interplaying with classic nickel-bluehues.

F-1892-47 1892 Liberty nickel MS-64

Price: $750
Refreshing, charming eye-appeal dominates both sides of this lovely Liberty nickel, particularly the reverse, which has begun to display the beginning of album rainbow toning. This coin is quite choice for the grade of MS-64, and stands well above the average coin in this grade. Neither side displays any marks of consequence, and it appears to me that only a single, faint hairline on the obverse is reponsible for keeping this coin from a GEM grade. Even the strike is above average, displaying a good, strong ear of corn at the bottom of the wreath.

F-1893-08 1893 Liberty nickel MS-61

Price: $170
Even after considerable examination, this Liberty nickel seems to be graded very conservatively by ANACS. As it turns out, there is a sliight and minor rim disturbance visible at the top of the reverse, and this must be what accounts for the seemingly too-low grade.. Admittedly, the slab insert somewhat obscures the edge, and there may be something more present at the edge that is hidden by the plastic. Otherwise, this is an absolutely gorgeous coin for anyone that appreciates the series. The patina is deep, thick and painstakingly original, and the strike is simply outstanding - nearly full. As any collector knows, all the coins in the early 1890s are tough, particularly this nice.

F-1893-46 1893 Liberty nickel MS-63

Price: $225
An extraordinary strike resulted in detail that is just about as perfect as it gets. Every obverse star is well struck, and the ear of corn on the reverse is uncommonly well detailed. Incidental marks are nearly nonexistent, and two out of the three grading factors indicate a grade of at least MS-65. However, the luster is subdued, and there is an overly thick patina on the obverse that may be partially responsible for the diminished cartwheel effect that would be necessary for a very high grade. Buy this one if you are a detail fanatic.

F-1895-11 1895 Liberty nickel (F/S) MS-64

Price: $650
A rather remarkable coin whose technical grade is limited only by superficial surface marks that barely graze the surface in scattered areas. The strike is absolutely outstanding, and I consider this a fully-struck coin, with every detail visible, and even the kernels of corn in the left ear struck up with pin-point accuracy. ALL stars are fully struck as well! As a result of the strong strike, the luster is very active and lively. I paid a strong premium for this coin, having recognized the exceptional strike immediatly, and the asking price reflects a markup for this highly desirable characteristic.

F-1896-49 1896 Liberty nickel PF-64

Price: $900
Stunning gem, possibly undergraded by PCGS. This proof displays light cameo contrast, but more importantly, is visually enhanced by some astonishingly beautiful rainbow toning on both sides. The presence of a few trivial carbon spots may be what caused it to be graded just PF-64, but the eye-appeal of this coin is considerable.

F-1897-23 1897 Liberty nickel MS-64

Price: $600
Liberty nickels are not well known for having many representatives that exhibit beautiful color or toning, but this coin is an exception. It is a vibrantly lustrous example with a nearly completely circular rainbow of vivid color on the obverse, and a reverse that displays a semi-circle of identically colored rainbow toning as well. A magnificent coin which, perhaps surprisingly, merits a technical MS-64 grade as well, as indicated on the NGC slab. Well struck, but not fully so, and with eye-appeal that is considerably above average, and make this coin a hands-down winner.

F-1898-36 1898 Liberty nickel MS-63

Price: $220
Choice for the grade, with excellent surface quality and pleasing luster. The strike is likely the limiting factor, since there are no abrasions or marks to detract. But it is obvious from the reverse weakness that the strike is a bit below average.

F-1899-08 1899 Liberty nickel MS-64

Price: $300
Supremely original coin, conservatively graded by ANACS. In fact, this coin is a no-question GEM, except for a faint and shallow abrasion midway Liberty's neck and star 12. Highly lustrous and fairly well struck, and it bears repeating that this is a totally original coin, undipped and never enhanced in any way.

F-1901-08 1901 Liberty nickel MS-63

Price: $165
Probably MS-64 quality in terms of surface quailty and strike, but the fields have a few too many carbon spots, and Liberty's cheek displays two rather long, but shallow bagmarks.

F-1907-26 1907 Liberty nickel MS-64

Price: $225
A PCI gold holder containing a coin that is accurately graded! Bioth sides are pleasingly smooth and unblemished, and the strike is far better than average, with a well defined left ear of corn on the reverse. Exceptionally well struck.

F-1911-10 1911 Liberty nickel (F/S) MS-64

Price: $500
Considering the high-mintage date, this is a pretty nicely struck Liberty nickel, including exceptional reverse detail. In fact, I have designated this coin to have a full strike. The surfaces are wondefully original, with lemon-yellow patina highlighting the excellent surfaces, and the toning pattern on the reverse resembling the bulls-eye toning so popular today. Clearly, this coin spent a lot of time in an album. Conservatively graded MS-64 by ANACS, and a stellar coin by any standard.

F-1912-10 1912 Liberty nickel MS-64

Price: $290
The unusual toning pattern of this coin is hard to describe, and I recommend careful viewing of the image. Suffice it to say the coin is rather heavily and originally patinated, and dominated by gold and iridescent yellow hues. The strike is good, but not great, while the luster is quite good.

F-1936-LOT 1936-PDS Buffalo nickel MS-65

Price: $260
The P is bright and brilliant, nearly to the point of being chromelike, while the S is filled wi th semi-bright, satiny luster. The D is lightly bathed in golden tones. The former two coins are very sell struck, but the Denver coin is not as well detailed as its companions.

G-1800-55 1800 Draped Bust half-dime (LM-1, R.3) net Fine

Price: $1,900
VF-20+ details on the obverse are mated to a reverse that grades very nearly EF. Both sides, but particularly the obverse, are attractively toned and show nice patination. Unfortunately, some hairlines scratches on both sides detract somewhat from the overall eye-appeal, resulting in my grade of just Fine-12. Surely a bargain at this grade level.

G-1830-06 1830 Capped Bust half-dime (LM-3) VF-35

Price: $190
Surprisingly lustrous, but too flat across the central areas to support a higher grade.

G-1831-CN 1831 Capped Bust half-dime (LM-6) MS-61

Price: $375
Although the commercial grade is technically accurate, the eye-appeal of this slightly semi-prooflike coin seem a little better than the assigned grade. My guess is that a fairly substantial carbon spot on the reverse resulted in the lower net-grade. Lovely album iridescence is seen on both sides, and lends particular appeal to the reverse fields.

G-1832-01 1832 Capped Bust half-dime (LM-12) VF-25

Price: $180
The '8' in the date has a filled lower loop, leading to easy attribution. A deeply and unquestionably original coin with marvelous grey and rose color on each side. This variety is typified by very mushy shield detail on the reverse, but feather details is characteristically sharp for the grade.

G-1833-55 1833 Capped Bust half-dime (LM-9) EF-40

Price: $175
Nicely detailed obverse, while the reverse is a bit weaker.

G-1835-55 1835 Capped Bust half-dime AU-50

Price: $300
Semi-prooflike, yet displays thoroughly attractive mint luster at the peripheries.

G-1835-JM 1835 Capped Bust half-dime (LM-10) MS-62

Price: $250
Very white and frosty, with a strike that is well above average for the issue.

G-1836-49 1836 Capped Bust half-dime (LM3, TDS) EF-40

Price: $600
Terminal die-state

G-1836-53 1836 Capped Bust half-dime MS-64

Price: $1,750
A remarkable coin that was discovered in a veteran collector's type set, this capped-bust half-dime displays thick, aggressive mint frost on both sides, and exquisite originality. It's too bad the iridescent album toning that sometimes clings to these coins is present only on the reverse, as it is exceedingly brilliant and glamorous, tempting the collector to choose to display this coin reverse-up. Nonetheless, the obverse is strikingly attractive as well, displaying excellent gold color that pales slightly across the portrait, yielding a slight cameo enhanced the marvelous frosty luster. Simply a stunning coin that can only possibly enhance any coin collection.

G-1837-37 1837 Capped bust half-dime (LM-1 lg 5) VF-20

G-1837-44 1837 Seated Liberty half-dime (no-stars) EF-40+

Price: $400
Lovely, original coin that still displays hints of cartwheel effect. Nice surface coloration.

G-1837-46 1837 Seated Liberty half-dime (no-stars) VF-30

Price: $275
No text description has been provided for this coin. Please see image.

G-1837-52 1837 Capped Bust half-dime (no stars) AU-50

Price: $750
The 1837 Seated Liberty half-dime with no stars on the obverse is not a rare coin, whether attributed as a so-called “small” or “large” date. What many collectors may not realize is that what distinguishes the two varieties is not the relative size of the digits, but rather the shape of the top serif of the numeral “1” in the date. The “small date” features a straight serif, whereas the first digit for the “large date” displays a fancy curved serif. The present coin is the former example, but this is not your usual plain-Jane AU coin! On the contrary, the quality of the coin offered here today is underscored by two distinguishing characteristics that place it well above the average example in terms of eye-appeal. First, the strike is excellent, throughout the devices, though some die crumbling is evident at the edges. Second, and more immediately apparent, the surfaces have acquired natural, scrumptious toning that is patterned differently across each side. The obverse faces up as being primarily ice-blue, with an undercurrent of mellow-yellow, gold and crimson colors pulsing below the date. The reverse establishes more of a typical album pattern, with an ocean-blue middle that is encircled by chartreuse, magenta and true-blue accents. Very pretty! Finally, although this half-dime faces up as being substantially nicer than just the AU-50 grade assigned by ANACS, a full description is required to note a few surface abrasions, including a couple of intermittent pinscratches across the obverse, but the simple fact is that the aesthetic effect of the color overshadows this shortcoming.

H-1805-14 1805 Draped Bust dime (JR-2, 4 berry) VG-8

Price: $1,075
An incredibly original coin with rich, thick patina and low-contrast tan-grey details that show up nicely against darker charcoal fields. Central detail on the reverse is much closer to Fine than VG, with a completely readable motto being the bonus. There are no rim dings, digs or marks to detract, and the only blemish - and it is really trivial - is an unimportant hairline lying across Liberty's lower portrait.

H-1814-14 1814 Capped Bust dime (JR-3, R.2) VG-10

Price: $120
Very good original surfaces are blemished only by an ancient diagonal scratch through the lower bust area of Libertys' portrait. The ash-grey color is very appealing.

H-1820-22 1820 Capped Bust dime (JR-8, R.3) F-12

Price: $60
Detail is suggestive of a slightly higher grade, but there are a few too many minor circulation marks, dings and scratches on the reverse to qualify this coin as 'problem free'. They probably aren't meaningful on a coin as diminutive as a bust dime, but they are noticeably present under magnification.

H-1820-49 1820 Capped Bust dime (JR-2 office boy) EF-45+

Price: $875
Remarkably lustrous, with rings of both obverse and reverse toning that border on being full rainbows. This coin is oh-so-close to being AU-50 it isn't funny, and the eye-appeal probably could argue for the grade being given the boost, but when a coin is THIS nice, what do mere numbers really mean? To top it all off, this is the die-marriage whimsically known as the 'office boy reverse'. All the expected diagnostics are clearly defined, most importantly the laughably repunched D of UNITED, and the blatantly joined AM of AMERICA. A superlative example of an issue that is known in high grades, but seldom appears on the market in collector grades of such choice quality. Superlative in EVERY respect!

H-1821-02 1821 Capped Bust dime (JR-7) EF-40

Price: $425
Original coin with some two-toned coloration. Hints of mint luster present at the peripheral areas.

H-1821-05 1821 Capped Bust dime (JR-1) EF-40+

Price: $460
Fantastic original coin.

H-1821-13 1821 Capped Bust dime (JR-5, lg dt) VF-25

Price: $190
Shallow hairline scratches appear in a couple of places, but are well blended into the patina. Hints of gold color highlight the upper relief areas of Liberty's portrait.

H-1821-14 1821 Capped Bust dime (JR-9, sm dt) F-12

Price: $100
Prodigious crust assures the original surface quality of this 'small date' example.

H-1821-39 1821 Capped Bust dime (LM-7) EF-40

Price: $500
A nice large-date example of the type.

H-1823-14 1823/2 Capped Bust dime (JR-1) VF-20

Price: $225
As usual, the central obverse details are a bit mushy for the very-fine grade, but they are in fact all there. This is a supremely original coin, with plenty of good patina and just a few very faint, old hairline scratches as would be expected from circulation.

H-1823-51 1823/2 Capped Bust dime VF-20

Price: $150
A difficult coin to grade, as the 1823/2 always looks like it is a half grade lower than surface quality might otherwise suggest. This coin possesses fantastic surfaces, with no blemishes other than faint circulation marks expected of the grade. Dentilation is very strong on the obverse, and mostly present on the reverse except in the lower areas where the coin was struck slightly off the flan. Very faint hints of mint luster peek-a-boo from around the obverse stars.

H-1827-02 1827 Capped Bust dime (JR-11) VF-30+

Price: $275
Ancient hairlines may indicate an incidental cleaning, but this coin presents as a nice, original piece. I believe the color to be totally original and not accelerated in any way. Lousy central details are often the case with JR-11, but there actually hints of mint luster evident at the edges.

H-1827-55 1827 Capped Bust dime (JR-13, R.3) EF-45

Price: $480
A peculiarly attractive coin, despite it's originality being a little in doubt (but not moreso than any coin of this vintage). The obverse has the proof-like character that is frequenly noticed for JR-13, and the details are nicely defined and sharp, except for the star centers, which are lacking in detail. Reverse details are also excellent, though the reverse fields are not prooflike, and display a little cartwheel effect. Neither side displays any hairlines, and overall, the coin is pleasingly free of any major surface detractions. On the obverse, a couple of unimportant tics can be seen in the right field, but they are well below the threshold of what is acceptable at the EF-AU grade level. The color of this coin is somewhat unusual, predominantly silvery-grey, but with a lot of ice-blue coloration filling outward toward the peripheral areas. Just left of the denomination on the reverse is an unexpected tiny stain of very black color, appearing much like a carbon spot.

H-1828-01 1828 Capped Bust dime (JR-1 sm dt) F-12

Price: $90
Perfectly original example of this underrated date. LIBERTY lacks only a hint of definition, as does E PLURIBUS UNUM, but the bold rims and overall clean-cut appearance define the grade.

H-1828-14 1828 Capped Bust dime (JR-1 sm dt) VF-20

Price: $260
Without a doubt, both varieties of 1828 dimes are undevalued on most price guides. I never, ever find problem-free examples available, even at so-called 'retail' prices! The example here is nearly the perfect coin. It displays favorable originality, a good strike (for the issue), and problem-free rims and fields. The only detraction of any consequence is an incisive mark directly on the eagle's neck, but it is an offense only of the mildest sort. There is a faint dig in the field above the date, but I honestly didn't even see it until I reviewed this coin with a 7 power glass. The details grade probably is five or so points better than my overall grade, but taking the minor surface detractions into account leads to a simple VF assignment.

H-1829-01 1829 Capped Bust dime (JR-4) VF-30

Price: $215
Flint-grey color assures originality, and the briefest hints of mint luster around the stars suggests the grade, along with plenty of bold detail. The beaded border is complete. There is a dark patch of toning on the right side of the obverse and a mild surface graze near the same area, but this is really a nice coin.

H-1830-47 1830 Capped Bust dime (LM-6) VG-8

Price: $40
Although a common die-marriage, this example of the issue appears to be a very late (and possibly unreported) die-state. I could find no mention of it in the Logan reference. The digit 1 in the date displays outstanding defects on either side of the stem, causing it to appear as a squarish 'blob' on the coin. I would be interested in any further information for this coin. A couple of scratches on the left obverse field do inhibit the eye-appeal of this otherwise original coin.

Price: $80
Pleasing, original patina.

H-1833-55 1833 Capped Bust dime (JR-5) EF-40

Price: $285
Charcoal grey toning is particularly strong on the reverse, and contrasts with somewhat lighter-grey silver highlights. A reverse rim ding appears at 2:00. A nicely detailed coin for the grade.

H-1834-33 1834 Capped Bust dime (JR-1) VF-20

Price: $95
A nice, solid and original very-fine coin. Graphite color in the fields contrast against beige devices. Darker tone thinly streaks above Liberty's eye and ear.

H-1835-04 1835 Capped Bust dime (LM-5.1) AU-55

Price: $450
Extremely high quality dime with fabulous, original surfaces and a good strike.

H-1837-42 1837 Capped Bust dime (LM-4) EF-40

Price: $240
Because of the bisecting obverse die-crack that weakened and ulitmately shattered the obverse die, this die-marriage must always be graded by the reverse. There are four die-marriages for 1837, and three of them display a bisecting die-crack, which explains the popularity of the date, and the reason why an otherwise common issue is actually a little tough to find available on the market. This is a nicely original coin that actually displays glimmers of mint luster, which would tend to imply a slightly higher grade. However, a couple of rim dings figure into my EF assignment, particularly at 8:00 on the obverse, and a couple more on the left side of the reverse. The reverse shows some nice rotation, which I personally believe was intentionally done by the mint in an attempt to extend the use of the faulty obverse die.

H-1891-01 1891 Seated Liberty dime MS-62

Price: $210
Plenty of colorful, original color clings to both sides of this lustrous coin. Beneath the iridescence lie very bright surfaces that lend considerably to the eye-appeal. Removed from an ANACS MS-62 holder.

H-1891-33 1891 Seated Liberty dime MS-65

Price: $700
Luster shimmers off both sides of this little jewel. Orange and indigo tones have settled into the obverse margins, while the reverse swirls with a broader combination of citrus and sea-green tones.

H-1916s-01 1916-S Barber dime MS-62

Price: $135
Slightly prooflike appearance may be responsible for a slight lack of luster that would otherwise cause this coin to grade MS-63. Nonetheless, quite a pretty gem-looking coin. Subtle hues of iridescent yellow and sky blue can be seen on the surfaces from some viewing angles. Very pleasing, and begging to be called choice! Removed from a PCI Gold MS-64 holder.

I-1875cc-51 1875-CC Seated Liberty twenty-cent VF-20

Price: $1,000
An unevenly struck coin (which is usually true of this issue), with pleasing, finer detail visible on Liberty's upper portrait and at the eagle's lower wings and plumage, but mushier details elsewhere. It is likely this coin was struck with slightly misaligned dies. LIBERTY is basically readable, though parts of a few letters are missing, and the horizontal shield lines are incomplete. Were the strike more consistent, this coin would have claims to an EF grade, as some remnants of mint luster remain in protected areas. Completely original, and an extremely difficult issue to locate lately.

J-1805-43 1805 Draped Bust quarter VF-35

Price: $1,600
Except for a dig that appears in the lower left-hand quadrant of the shield on the reverse, the surfaces and both rims of this coin are pleasingly free of any defects or circulation-related problems. Originality is very good, and the coloration, though leaning a bit towards rouge hues, is displayed in a pleasing pattern of dark fields surmounted by lighter-colored detail elements. The contrast so provided allows the details to appear even stronger to the eye than would be suggested by the amount of wear. The weakness of the letter E at the top of the obverse, and the peripheral weakness above RICA on the reverse are diagnostic of this variety, as is the missing dentil above E2. Rim dentilation is fairly well complete, with weakness seen between 2:00 and 3:00 of the obverse, and 7:00 and 8:00 of the reverse due to a slightly tapered planchet (as struck). The obverse central details are particularly sharp, though. Micro-tics due entirely to early circulation are scattered about both sides, but they are obviously completely in line with the degree of circulation seen by a coin of this vintage. There really is not much to complain about, especially with regard to the difficulty in acquiring decent examples of this difficult type, and this coin would face up well for either type or date purposes.

J-1805-61 1805 Draped Bust quarter (B-3, DS V) VF-30

Price: $2,400
Remarkably pleasing appearance is produced by a tri-tone color scheme that includes smooth, evenly patinated graphite fields contrasting well with lighter silvery highpoints details. Dark charcoal tones outline all the devices, yielding a bold appearance that seems even stronger than the assigned grade. Dentilation is wonderfully bold and complete, and the only distraction is a tiny rim ding at exactly 12:00 on the obverse.

J-1806-01 1806 Draped Bust quarter (B-7) EF-40

Price: $2,400
The level of obverse detail leaves no doubt as to the extremely -fine grade of this early quarter, although the reverse is not nearly as nicely detailed due to strike (hence the split grade). Primarily charcoal grey in color, with sharply contrasting highlights across the stars, letters and detail highpoints. Amazingly free of any scratches or circulation marks of any kind, and 100% fully dentilated on both sides.

J-1806-40 1806 Draped Bust quarter (B-3) VF-20

Price: $1,300
Prices on early quarters with original character are just spiraling out of sight these days. I simply cannot keep these coins in stock, and I feel like my prices are strong! Of course, the problems is that I have to pay out the nose for choice specimens. Here's an example that technically just barely makes a VF grade. I say 'barely', because typically, I would look for a stronger reverse motto and a bit more dentilation. However, this is, after all, a B-3 which always has central weakness, and overall was just not a very well produced die-marriage. But what's important here is the strong originality of this specimen. The color is perfectly original, and though not thoroughly even, that fact simply reinforces the notion that the coin has not been 'improved' or messed with. Very choice quality, but at a stiff premium, which is as it should be.

J-1806-55 1806/5 Draped Bust quarter (B-1) VG-10

Price: $1,000
Superb originality that is marred only by the thinnest imaginable hairline i the right obverse field. The rims display some peculiarities whereby the first digit in the date is merged, as are the tops of a few peripheral letters on the reverse, but this is due entirely to an uneven planchet. The rims themselves are flawless and free of any bumps. An exceedlingly attractive coin.

J-1818-03 1818 Capped Bust quarter (B-8) EF-45

Price: $1,500
An incredibly attractive and original early bust quarter with huge rim dentilation and fabulous detail. Deep charcoal color hides within the protected areas, ceding to graphite color in the fields, which in turn contrasts nicely with the silvery-grey highlights. The entire coin has a faded yellowish cast overall.

J-1818-04 1818 Capped Bust quarter (B-2) VF-20

Price: $500
A very faint, pale yellow-gold cast is apparent on both sides of this boldly detailed and original coin. This variety seldom shows good dentilation, and such is the case here. Nonetheless, the central details are nice and suggestive of the VF grade, especially the central obverse areas. Generally unblemished, there are a couple of circulation ticks on the obverse, and the very top of the obverse rim displays a slight scrape

J-1818-14 1818 Capped Bust quarter (B-2, R.1) VF-25

Price: $550
A fantastic, original appearance is enhanced by ideal two-tone contrast between fields and devices. This coin would merit a slightly higher grade were it not for a minor blemish on the upper left area of the eagle's shield, and a couple of very minor rim dings.

J-1818-55 1818 Capped Bust quarter (B-2) F-15

Price: $340
E PLURIBUS UNUM is complete and strong, and the rims are fairly well-defined, though the die-state is evidently responsible for weak dentilation. Supremely original, with soft hints of burgundy color over predominantly grey obverse surfaces, while the reverse implies a faint impression of bluish iridescence. Beautiful type coin.

J-1820-06 1820 Capped Bust quarter (B-3) VF-25

Price: $540
A couple of almost trivial circulation scratches can be seen on the obverse of this original coin. Some fairly attractive blue and autumn-gold toning encirrcles both sides.

J-1821-02 1821 Capped Bust quarter (B-3) F-12

Price: $235
Overall, this coin barely acheives the Fine level, based primarily on the reverse with has a full E PLURIBUS UNUM. The obverse is a mite weak for the grade, but a lack of any problems allows for the assessment.

J-1821-14 1821 Capped Bust quarter (B-3, R.2) F-12

Price: $190
Cleaned, but only mildly so. The fields are not hairlined, but it is clear that very little patina remains on the metal. Undamaged, and likely to retone gently over time, given the appropriate circumstances.

J-1821-15 1821 Capped Bust quarter (B-4, R.3) VF-30

Price: $640
Worthy of a VF-35 grade for details, but the discerning collector will note a couple of hairline scratces on the obverse, one near 10:00 and another near 3:00. The color on this one is a little uneven, but acceptable, with ashy fields that blend into dark borders around the devices, which themselves are a little paler on the highlights. An additional circulation abrasion is noted just above the left two digits of the date.

J-1825-01 1825/3 Capped Bust quarter (B-2) VF-25

Price: $800
This is a fantastic example of a common overdate in the bust quarter series. Perfectly blemishless surfaces on both sides are characterized by smooth, even grey color and a very good strike. One might wish for a bit more contrast between the highpoint detail and the fields, but that is a subjective preference, and nobody can reasonably deny the excellent appeal of truly original surface quality as exemplified here. Possibly a bit better than my VF-25 grade.

J-1828-01 1828 Capped Bust quarter (B-4) VF-25

Price: $480
An extremely orignal and fully patinated early quarter that is close to being a perfect coin. All that bars such an assessment is an ancient toned-over scratch that penetrates the right half of Liberty's cap and results in a 5 point deduction or so in grade. Otherwise, there are not blemishes or distractions at all, and the color is fantastic. Fully dentilated across each side, and virtually at the EF detail grade level.

J-1834-33 1834 Capped Bust quarter (B-3, R.3) EF-45

Price: $475
Exquisite, purely original coin with just a very little wear. More luster appears on the reverse than the obverse.

J-183X-08 183X Capped Bust quarter Holed

Price: $25
VF details on a coin that has been severely holed, with the reverse displaying particularly violent damage.

J-1853-26 1853/4 Seated Liberty quarter VF-20

Price: $375
Not an early die state, though the underdigit can be seen easily with a loupe. Ashy grey, and possibly slightly undergraded, as the reverse actually has details somewhat better than a VF-20, and even yields faint hints of mint luster. Nice coin!

J-1862-51 1862 Seated Liberty quarter AU-55

Price: $280
Removed from an NGC AU-58 holder, though that grade seems a little generous overall. Although details and remaining mint luster are consistent with 'slider' status, the left obverse field displays a couple of bolder hairline scratches that should be accounted for. Luckily, some gorgeous album tone has infiltrated the borders of each side, framing the devices in a lovely halo of colorful imagery, mostly royal-blue and vanilla-gold. Very lustrous.

J-1877s-33 1877-S Seated Liberty quarter MS-62

Price: $400
Prooflike to the point of having cameo contrart on the obverse. The reverse is more normally lustrous, but both sides gleam and sparkle.

J-1926d-26 1926-D Standing Liberty quarter MS-65

Price: $515
An issue that is plagued with 'dish head' coins, and for which a 'full head' designation demands outrageous premiums, on the order of 4000% (yes FORTY times) over non-full head coins. Although correctly not designated as such, this example provides about 50% of Liberty's head detail, and while that may not seem so exciting, remember how often these come with little more than a 'scoop' where her head should be! The shield provides a majority of the rivets as well. Pleasingly bright and certainly worthy of a little premium over the typical mushy piece.

Omaha Bank Hoard pedigree (as if anybody would care).

J-1961-26 1961 Washington quarter PR-68

Price: $75
A borderline DCAM obverse is paired with a CAM reverse, though PCGS erroneously failed to apply a CAM grade (which it obviously warrants). Exceedingly brilliant and flashy.

K-1794-CN 1794 Flowing Hair half-dollar (O-101a) VG-8

Price: $5,500
The eagle is fully 100% outlined on the reverse, though admittedly, the coin must be tilted to view some of the detail. Liberty's portrait is bold and nicely detailed for a coin with this much wear. A short, diagonal pinscratch appears right smack-dab in the center of Liberty's hair, yet the dark toning lessens its impact, and honestly, it doesn't really detract. Although obviously not an original coin, the surfaces are not unattractive, and are only a little glossy. Other than a slight rim bump near S13, the rims are in good shape, and except for the mentioned pinscratch, and a little surface dig near S14, the surface quality is pretty decent. Demand for 1794 half-dollars is unceasing by both type and series collectors, so even in such a low a grade, a coin like this is highly desirable.

K-1795-51 1795 Flowing Hair half-dollar (O-131) VF-25/VG-10

Price: $5,950
Here is astounding, breathless original quality in a type coin. It would be difficult to imagine a better-qualified example of this early fifty-cent coin - and in this grade - than this Flowing hair half-dollar. The surfaces are incredibly original, with a deep, thick, frosty and flawless grey patina that covers each side from rim to rim, and emanates hints of appealing steel-blue color from out of the protected areas. All surfaces are entirely immaculate, save a tiny pinprick-sized planchet-flaw that appears near Liberty's nose. A split grade is mandatory for this coin, as the obverse intrudes well into Very Fine territory, while the flip side, due to a poorly hubbed reverse die, has the detail of only a VG+. Grading services will miss the mark on this variety because they often don't know this die marriage well enough to evaluate the grading factors properly. The reverse on most every O-131 specimen is nearly flat due to the shallow relief of the die. More significant is the fact that the obverse detail on O-131 is ALWAYS flat in the center. Every coin from this obverse die has a flat patch of hair from neck to hair end, and this deficiency of detail should not affect the grade. A technical overall grade average should be F-15, but 'grade' is of secondary importance when considering the astonishing appeal of a truly original coin. You simply are not going to find anything better than this for a mid-grade circulated type example.

K-1803-16 1803 Draped Bust half-dollar (O-101) VF-35

Price: $1,200
A patient search for cartwheel luster does reveal faint hints of flowline luster, slightly more so on the reverse, and the overall appearance is that of a coin right on the cusp of grading XF-40. However, one would like to see a slightly better defined transition between the Liberty’s forehead and the forelocks, hence the coin misses the grade literally by a hair’s breadth. E PLURIBUS UNUM is generally prominent with the exception of the second “U”, and the Eagle’s eye is missing, but the otherwise bold reverse details confirm the near-XF level of preservation. No detrimental marks or hairlines are masked by the nicely even patination, and any early type collector will be pleased with the quality for the assigned grade. O-101 is a “large 3” variety.

K-1806-16 1806/5 Draped Bust half-dollar (O-101) VF-25

Price: $750
Doubled edge lettering seems to be the rage these days; in fact, the Presidential dollar is selling for large premiums when this error is present. However, it is far more difficult to locate a Draped Bust half dollar with this same error. We are pleased to offer such a coin today. Your cataloger will not attempt to decipher the subliminal message imparted by the jumble of letters as they appear on the edge of this coin, but suffice it to say that even a brief examination will reveal the error. A nice coin that grades a bit better than VF-30, but it is netted down slightly on account of a few disturbances in the obverse fields.

K-1807-14 1807 Capped Bust half-dollar (O-112, 50/20) VF-30

Price: $850
An exquisitely original coin that could not be improved upon in appearance at this grade level. Sharp obverse details are characteristically shallow along the leading edge of Liberty's portrait, and the eagle's left wing is also flat as usual, but overall dentilation is pleasing and the rims are strong. There is no blemish of note at all, and the only detraction is a very minor dark spot left of the date. Fantastic color and a very evenly distributed patina complete the picture of a virtually flawless, original coin.

K-1807-22 1807 Capped Bust half-dollar (O-112, 50/20) VF-20

K-1807-57 1807 Capped Bust half-dollar (O-112, 50/20) EF-40

Price: $850
A moderately uneven toning pattern on the obverse is only of mild distraction, as overall , this is a sharply detailed coin. The eagle's wing displays particularly pleasing definition, and overall original quality is acceptable.

K-1808-04 1808/7 Capped Bust half-dollar (O-101) AU-55

Price: $2,000
Lively mint luster converges around both sides of this flashy near-unc coin.

K-1808-26 1808/7 Capped Bust half-dollar (O-101) EF-40

Price: $675
Absolutely delightful, fully original coin with smooth, ash grey central details that fade to darker grey near the borders. Moderately well struck, with each star showing sharp internal details.

K-1808-51 1808 Capped Bust half-dollar EF-40+

Price: $750
Difficult to grade, as usual, since the remaining mint luster actually implicates the AU level, though the usual mushy strike is responsible for deficient central portrait details. This is a delightfully pristine coin, with perhaps a single faint hairline or two, and no serious impact defects. Only an old scratch below the reverse motto can be called a detraction, but it does not harm the eye-appeal that much at all.

K-1809-02 1809 Capped Bust half-dollar (O-115a, R.3) VG-10+

Price: $125
Unquestionably original in the extreme, with plenty of dark patina caked on both sides. Typically struck in the central areas.

K-1809-07 1809 Capped Bust half-dollar (O-115) VF-25

Price: $165
Thickly patinated on both sides with deep, original dark color save for a small area of the reverse rim at 10:00. A fairly flat strik, as usual.

K-1809-16 1809 Capped Bust half-dollar (O-103) AU-50

Price: $2,750
This is an extremely attractive, early Capped bust half. Exquisite bands of original iridescence cling to the edges of the coins in nearly perfect, concentric circles, with the colors blending from charcoal, to sunset orange, to brilliant lemon-yellow to sea-green, and finally yielding to the mixture of aqua and rose hues that dominate the rest of the coin. Amazingly, the obverse and reverse are also almost perfectly matched. Areas of light wear are revealed as greyish highlights on the higher points of the detail, but the substantial remaining mint luster confirms the grade of this coin as being near AU. An utterly delightful example of the series, and a coin well worth the substantial premium I had to pay for it.

K-1809-17 1809 Capped Bust half-dollar (O-106) EF-45

Price: $600
The reverse strike is unusually sharp for 1809, and the obverse is above average as well, and with just a little more cartwheel luster, this coin would achieve the AU level. Even as it is, some glittering mint luster does peek through the original, marbled patina, contributing to the overall good eye-appeal of this example. Just a nice example of a tougher early date in the bust-half series.

K-1810-14 1810 Capped Bust half-dollar (O-101a) AU-55

Price: $2,800
Exquisite coin that far exceeds the quality and aesthetic beauty of the typical 1810. This common variety (and die-state) is easily recognized by the extensively developed peripheral die-crack that extends from the bottom of the date, clockwise through stars on the left-hand side, and later develops additional branches off the right-side of the date. Because of this weakening of the dies, coins of this variety are often not that well struck, but this coin is a happy exception, being a little better struck than average. Luster booms off this beauty, though, and it is only enhanced by elegant, multi-colored album toning cling tastefully to the outer reaches of both sides. The planchet is of superior quality in every respect, and there are no dings, marks or abrasions detracting from the rim quality. The faintest of surfaces hairlines can be seen at certain angles extending downward across Liberty's portrait, but it is merely an incidental effect of very brief circulation. Without question, this is a truly premium-quality coin.

K-1810-DG 1810 Capped Bust half-dollar (O-105, R.2) EF-40

Price: $265
From a technical standpoint, the details of this early half-dollar barely permit an EF grade, but it must be realized that this is one of the typical 1810 die-marriages that always have unpredicitable strikes. What's important is the amount of mint luster that this coin displays on both sides. Indeed, there might be enough cartwheel effect to actually quailfy for a slightly higher grade, but an honest description must include mention of a couple of inconsiderate, little pinscratches above the eagle's head that must be accounted for. Thus, a straight EF-40 grade is highly appropriate for this somewhat attractive coin. Appeal is enhanced a little with the appearance of some occasional light-blue iridescence around the periphery of both sides.

K-1812-04 1812 Capped Bust half-dollar (O-105) VF-25

Price: $215
Purely original surfaces are toned with pleasing tobacco colors that gravitate toward the margins.

K-1812-26 1812 Capped Bust half-dollar (O-104a) AU-53

Price: $800
Outstanding mint luster illuminates both edges, converging most profusely at the edges as always. That said, for the grade, there is a surprising amount of cartwheel effect visible in the fields, suggesting some consideration for a fully 'choice' grade. 1812 is of course a date well know for poor strikes, but this one is definitely better than most.

K-1812-33 1812 Capped Bust half-dollar (O-108) EF-45

Price: $475
Although not perfectly original, this is a high quality coin for the grade and date, as 1812s are seldom this nicely struck and preserved. A photogenic coin that nonetheless displays VERY faint evidence of hairlines and hazing atop surfaces that appear very original otherwise. With just a little better surface quality, this would be a strong AU coin.

K-1813-16 1813 Capped Bust half-dollar (O-103) AU-55

Price: $1,600
Ex-Julian Liedman, where it was described as 'Very Choice Toned AU'.

K-1813-17 1813 Capped Bust half-dollar (O-108, R.4) AU-55

Price: $1,400
Very, very choice for an 1813, and a very scarce die-marriage as well, with the lack of rim dentilation one characteristic. The luster is wonderful, nearly filling the fields, and only briefly interrupted due to faint circulation. A tiny dimple is visible above the third digit in the date, but otherwise, it's a remarkably unmarked coin, displaying a vanilla-gold sheen, and no lack of eye-appeal.

K-1813-33 1813 Capped Bust half-dollar (O-101a 50/UNI) F-15

Price: $200
Typical for the variety, the obverse lacks many features, However, the reverse is decently sharp. A nice coin that is mostly original, though there is a rather recent superficial scuff that imparted some curved hairlines on Liberty's bust. They are not offensive, and are more than compensated by the exceptional character this piece displays.

K-1814-04 1814 Capped Bust half-dollar (O-104a) EF-40

Price: $375
Despite the presence of a moderate, old cleaning, this teen half displays a very attractive collar of rainbow color that frames the devices beautifully. Faintly abraded, but remants of mint luster persist in the protected areas. Properly net-graded in my opinion, as the luster is suggestive of EF-45.

K-1817-62 1817/3 Capped Bust half-dollar (O-101) EF-40

Price: $1,800
As one of the most popular and coveted overdates in the entire Overton series of bust halves, the 1817/3, like the 1818/7, has long been the target of coin doctors, and the number of cleaned coins in better grades surely exceeds the population of original examples. Contrary to the typical offering, the example here is a stunningly original coin. The patination on both sides appears exceedingly natural, being predominantly grey, but due to evident storage in an album, there is a band of subtle rainbow tones that sweep in a crescent pattern through the left field of the obverse, through the end of Liberty's bust, and down to the tops of the digits in the date. Hints of color also appear in the right field. The reverse displays a band of silvery luster around the periphery, surrounding the center of the coin which has also taken on some dolphin-blue coloration. Speaking to the outstanding quality of this coin are the blemishless surfaces. There is absoutely not even the slightest bagmark or hairline that can be found on this coin anywhere, even with a strong glass! Indeed, even the rims are utterly perfect, without even the tiniest rim nick to be found. As is frequently the case for this die-marriage, both sides display extensive clash-marks, and of course, the overdate is clear and easily-seen. Strike quality is only about average for the issue. It is very obvious that this coin was a prized possession in someone's collection for a long time, and was carefully preserved for future generations to enjoy, and the price necessarily reflects the difficulty I went through in acquiring it.

K-1818-04 1818 Capped Bust half-dollar (O-111) EF-40

Price: $240
Generally silver-grey coloration predominates across both sides of this evenly struck bust half. Nicely centered with excellent, full dentilation, and lightly abraded.

K-1818-07 1818 Capped Bust half-dollar (O-104a, R.3) VF-35

Price: $200
A bit pale by comparison to more original coins, but displays quite a bit of luster.

K-1819-02 1819/8 Capped Bust half-dollar (O-105) F-15

Price: $200
An extremely crusty coin with plenty of grungy tarnish resting on the surfaces. Rather bold for the 'fine' grade level.

K-1821-16 1821 Capped Bust half-dollar (O-104) AU-58

Price: $1,200
A thoroughly lustrous and intermittently brilliant jewel, this coin is about as close as one can get to uncirculated without being 'new'. No wear actually shows at all, but subtle discoloration of Liberty's cheek, and the most subtle shift in luster on the tip of the eagle's beak and the edge of the left wing confirm very slight circulation rub. In short, this is the TRUE definition of an AU-58, or 'slider unc' coin. Mint luster flow readly from edge to edge without interruption, and the original surfaces are undisturbed by any subsequent cleaning or doctoring attempts. A tenuous hint of ash-blue color merits mention, but overall, this coin is flashy silver with a faint golden cast.

K-1822-01 1822 Capped Bust half-dollar (O-113, R.3) VF-30

Price: $150
Extremely original coin, with 100% of it's original dirt fully intact. silvery-tan surface color, and reasonably bold detail. Reverse is basically EF. An outstanding coin for type.

K-1822-05 1822 Capped Bust half-dollar (O-115) EF-40

Price: $315
Hints of iridescence foretell rainbow toning were this coin to be placed back in an album. Even as it stands, it is a lovely, predominantly straw-gold with lighter silvery-grey highpoints. A fairly average strike for the date and variety, with unconditionally flawless surfaces.

K-1822-33 1822 Capped Bust half-dollar (O-110a) VF-20

Price: $150
A little pale, but not cleaned. Possibly touched with PVC contamination.

K-1822-51 1822 Capped Bust half-dollar (O-106a, R.4) AU-50

Price: $550
A higher grade is definitely tempting, since this coin flashes with at least two thirds of its original mint luster. However, some reed marks on Liberty's cheek require mention, and must be reflected in the overall grade. Lovely, gold mint frost yields a shimmering appearance for this better date bust half, and the details are a little better than average for the date.

K-1823-04 1823 Capped Bust half-dollar (O-106a) VF-35

Price: $180
Thickly patinated in slightly murky brown toning.

K-1823-05 1823 Capped Bust half-dollar (O-103) VF-25

Price: $140
Exceptionally smooth, bisque colored surfaces demonstrate fabulous, original quality. Mark free.

K-1823-07 1823 Capped Bust half-dollar (O-110, R.2) AU-50

Price: $575
A lot of cartwheel effect is plainly visible on either side of this evenly colored bust half. A nice doubled profile is visible, particularly at Liberty's bust. Platinum-bronze in color, with a strike that is about average for the issue and a reverse is nearly fully lustrous.

K-1825-27 1825 Capped Bust half-dollar (O-114) AU-50

Price: $460
Removed from an old ANACS holder (SN: 389963) because the holder was badly damaged and cracked.

K-1825-51 1825 Capped Bust half-dollar (O-105, R.2) AU-50

Price: $375
Slightly higher grade consideration would be perfectly understandable, except that a short pinscratch rests inconspicuously beneath the very top border of the obverse. This coin beams with more subtle mint luster that is probably faintly subdued by the original patina. Not flashy, but definitely attractive.

K-1827-33 1827 Capped Bust half-dollar (O-117) AU-50

Price: $315
Though not an excessively valuable coin, the aesthetic appearance of this charming bust half surpasses its technical grade as it benefits from graceful album toning rainbowed throughout both sides. Subtle hues of iridescent-green, ocean blue, and violet progress naturally from the margins toward the devices that themselves are accented with lighter highpoint color. Although bearing AU-55 details, your cataloger notes a short, sharp scrape directly above the cap, and another trailing USA on the reverse that account for a five point deduction in grade. Nonetheless, a conclusively attractive coin with rainbow tone that is obviously original and that will delight the collector of naturally patinated busties. A 'Square Base' variety.

K-1828-49 1828 Capped Bust half-dollar (O-117a) MS-61

Price: $1,250
A couple of stray hairlines are displayed in the left obverse field, but are not visible except at certain angles. A tiny particle, red in color, is stuck above the 2 of the date, though ironically, it's presence indicates the coin has not been cleaned, else the particle would have been removed. Nicely patinated over mild cartwheel luster that is unbroken, but perhaps a bit weaker than average. High point rub is pleasingly absent, indicating that this coin really is an UNC, and not a slider. The original patina reflects the slightest hints of bluish iridescence at some viewing angles under a strong light. Excellent type coin, especially in light of a terrific strike.

K-1830-33 1830 Capped Bust half-dollar (O-108) AU-50

Price: $500
Mint luster fills both sides of this fairly unusual appearing bust half. The reverse seems slightly prooflike, but the highpoints of both sides are touched with charcoal color that contrasts sharply against the somewhat pewter fields. Nicely struck.

K-1832-41 1832 Capped Bust half-dollar (O-103) AU-53

Price: $350
Absolutely delightful, original bronze-colored patination enhances the terrific strike of this early half dollar. It's amazing how nice an AU bust half can look and this coin shows why. The overall golden-bronze yields to greenish iridescence clinging to the outline of the devices, and luster rolls willingly completely around the periphery and - for the grade - comes enticingly close to the central field areas. For a die-marriage that was so nonchalantly produced, the detail is surprisingly sharp, with a shield that seems particularly well-struck, and flatness isolated primarily to the peak of the cap, and the high points of the hair detail. Just an utterly gorgeous, original example that would look beautiful in the coin cabinet of any bust half afficionado!

K-1836-02 1836/4 Capped Bust half-dollar (O-101) F-15

Price: $1,000
Overton briefly discusses the possibility of an 1836/4 overdate, and this coin seems to offer ouststanding support of that contention. The point of a '4' is clearly visible above the upper tail of the last digit in the date. A blot of thick black gunk sits between stars 4 and 5, but it can likely be removed if necessary. A fully original coin with no hairlines, and just a couple of fine, old scratches near the portrait.

K-1836-39 1836 Capped Bust half-dollar (O-117, R.3) AU-58

Price: $575
Light, pastel colors are seen on both sides of this flashy and highly appealing bust half. The color appears to be completely original and attractive, though not particularly uniform as it would be for bullseye toning.

K-1837-51 1837 Reeded Edge half-dollar AU-53

Price: $600
Considerable mint luster illuminates both sides with consistent mint frost that is lightly rubbed only on the high points. Indeed, about two thirds of the original mint luster remains, which would normally indicate an even higher grade, but the assigned AU-53 reflects a couple of delicate hairline scratches criss-crossed in the lower right obverse field. A well developed network of die cracks snake across the peripheral areas of both sides.

K-1838-02 1838 Reeded Edge half-dollar VF-30

Price: $180
Never cleaned or molested, and layered with thick, ultra-original patina. There is an old scratch hiding between the eagle's right (observed) wing and the rim.

K-1916d-51 1916-D Walking Liberty half-dollar F-12

Price: $90
An inactive greenish spot on the eagle's breast is the only detraction for this perfectly original early Walker.

K-1941s-51 1941-S Walking Liberty half-dollar MS-60

Price: $45
Typically struck and very white.

K-1941s-52 1941-S Walking Liberty half-dollar MS-63

Price: $125
Satiny mint luster glows with snow-white brilliance across each side. Not nearly as poorly struck as many competitors, but certainly not fully detailed, either.

K-1943s-04 1943-S Walking Liberty half-dollar MS-64

Price: $200
Satiny luster and a strike that is at least above average for this issue, which is normally poorly struck. A thin veneer of lavender color blushes across each side.

K-1945s-51 1945-S Walking Liberty half-dollar MS-65

Price: $200
Extremely original, with album colors that are particularly attractive on the right side of the obverse. The strike is below average, but the mint luster and overall eye appeal are both better than average for this better issue.

L-1874-02 1874 Trade dollar EF-40

Price: $275
Incredibly original coin. An unimportant rim bump is seen at 9:00 of the reverse.

L-1882s-51 1882-S Morgan dollar MS-65

Price: $150
Stone-cold white and brilliant.

L-1884cc-04 1884-CC Morgan dollar MS-64

Extremely rare transitional label - a 'doiley' in a rattler slab.

L-1899-33 1899 Morgan dollar MS-64

Price: $360
Tasteful accents of lavender and rose overtones intermingle throughout all areas of this pretty Morgan dollar. Typically lustrous for the issue.

L-1925-04 1925 Peace dollar MS-65

Price: $200
WAY above average for this common date!! This amount of flash and luster is uncommon on Peace dollars.

U-0045 1925 Lexington Commem. MS-65

Price: $750
An amazingly well-preserved and original GEM example of this somewhat out-of-favor early commemorative. This coin came to me in a Capital plastics capsule, and has survived the ravages of time due to the secure storage environment. Swirling, original frosty luster dominates both sides, and I cannot find any dings or hits that would reduce the appeal or grade of this beauty in any way.

U-0067 1893 Columbian half-dollar MS-64

Price: $200
Really fresh, original coin that has not been played with in any manner. It is a somewhat heavily patinated coin, but appears to me to have somewhat prooflike tendencies, especially the reverse. Strike quality is very nice, and it isn't immediately clear why this lovely coin couldn't grade higher.

U-0069 1893 Columbian half-dollar MS-62

Price: $110
White.

U-0070 1893 Columbian half-dollar MS-63

Price: $275
A fully prooflike example, with cameo frosted devices against near-deep mirrorlike fields. Essentially all white surfaces gleam wonderfully beneath a lamp, and as expected of a prooflike coin, the minor abrasions and bagmarks in the fields are a bit magnified, though the overall effect is well within the auspices of a Choice grade. Gorgeous coin that is distinguishable from a proof only by the lack of complete dentilation - otherwise, the strike is fantastic.
