Except for a dig that appears in the lower left-hand quadrant of the shield on the reverse, the surfaces and both rims of this coin are pleasingly free of any defects or circulation-related problems. Originality is very good, and the coloration, though leaning a bit towards rouge hues, is displayed in a pleasing pattern of dark fields surmounted by lighter-colored detail elements. The contrast so provided allows the details to appear even stronger to the eye than would be suggested by the amount of wear. The weakness of the letter E at the top of the obverse, and the peripheral weakness above RICA on the reverse are diagnostic of this variety, as is the missing dentil above E2. Rim dentilation is fairly well complete, with weakness seen between 2:00 and 3:00 of the obverse, and 7:00 and 8:00 of the reverse due to a slightly tapered planchet (as struck). The obverse central details are particularly sharp, though. Micro-tics due entirely to early circulation are scattered about both sides, but they are obviously completely in line with the degree of circulation seen by a coin of this vintage. There really is not much to complain about, especially with regard to the difficulty in acquiring decent examples of this difficult type, and this coin would face up well for either type or date purposes.
