A patient search for cartwheel luster does reveal faint hints of flowline luster, slightly more so on the reverse, and the overall appearance is that of a coin right on the cusp of grading XF-40. However, one would like to see a slightly better defined transition between the Liberty’s forehead and the forelocks, hence the coin misses the grade literally by a hair’s breadth. E PLURIBUS UNUM is generally prominent with the exception of the second “U”, and the Eagle’s eye is missing, but the otherwise bold reverse details confirm the near-XF level of preservation. No detrimental marks or hairlines are masked by the nicely even patination, and any early type collector will be pleased with the quality for the assigned grade. O-101 is a “large 3” variety.
